Description
In the late Showa period in Osaka, a spirited fifth-grade girl named Fuko Furomiya works at her familys public bathhouse, Funade-yu. Known as a local celebrity in the neighborhood, Fuko helps run the bathhouse counter while navigating the small but meaningful moments of daily life.
Fuko lives with her family and interacts with a colorful cast of townspeople who frequent the bathhouse. Her otherwise ordinary days take on new dimensions as she experiences her first crush on a handsome boy who appears at the bathhouse. Her younger brother claims to have spotted a UFO, sparking childhood wonder and speculation. Like many girls her age in that era, she also dreams of faraway places such as Hawaii.
The story unfolds through Fuko’s eyes, presenting a warm and sometimes bittersweet portrait of community life in postwar Japan. Her cheerful and energetic personality makes her a beloved figure in the neighborhood, and her coming-of-age experiences reflect the nostalgic charm of a bygone era. The narrative focuses on the gentle, everyday interactions between Fuko, her family, and the bathhouse customers who become like extended family. As the series concludes, these interconnected stories of childhood, first love, and community ties form a complete human drama set against the backdrop of a traditional Japanese sento.
