Description
Renji Kusakabe, an eighteen-year-old university student, works part-time at a local game arcade. One Valentine’s Day, he notices a young foreign girl struggling for hours with a claw machine, desperately trying to win a koala plushie. When Renji steps in and successfully retrieves the prize for her, the girl is overjoyed. However, due to cultural differences and the romantic connotations of Valentine’s Day in Japan, Lily Baker—a thirteen-year-old half-British girl who has just moved to the country—mistakes his simple act of kindness as a declaration of love.

Lily begins visiting the arcade daily, and what could have been an awkward misunderstanding instead becomes the foundation of an unusual friendship. To bridge the gap between their different backgrounds and languages, the pair start exchanging a notebook, using it to teach each other about their respective cultures and daily lives. The story follows this wholesome cultural exchange set against the colorful backdrop of the arcade, often referred to as a game center. As Lily’s Japanese improves and she comes out of her shell, she expands her social circle.

Renji’s younger sister, Aoi Kusakabe, becomes Lily’s classmate and close friend. Although Aoi initially has little interest in video games, she grows to love them through her friendship with Lily. The group is later joined by other colorful personalities, including the tomboyish gamer Karin Kaga, who shares a fierce rivalry with Renji in fighting games, and the diligent student council president Hotaru Katsuragi, who slowly becomes part of the regular arcade crowd. On the home front, Lily’s protective father, Oliver, initially views Renji with deep suspicion, creating comedic friction before eventually warming up to him.

Notable narrative arcs include Lily’s birthday, where her friends gift her an arcade fighting stick to encourage her gaming skills, a school cultural festival that blends British and Japanese traditions, and a fighting game tournament that brings the community together. As the series progresses, the story balances slice-of-life comedy, light romantic tension, and the genuine warmth of found family, showing how a simple arcade becomes the unlikely setting for deep cross-cultural friendships. The manga continues to follow Lily and Renji’s interactions, exploring how these two people from different worlds grow closer with each new volume.
