On a bridge overlooking the city, two identical women stand at the edge of their respective despair. Kida Akane is drowning in poverty. After her parents died leaving an enormous loan, her life plan of elite employment and a happy marriage has crumbled. Now supporting a hikikomori brother and just robbed of her last possessions, she contemplates suicide. Standing nearby is Tojo Reika, a wealthy housewife who seems to have everything. In reality, she is suffocating in a gilded cage, trapped in a marriage to a man who cannot function without the shadow of his deceased mother.

Fascinated by their mirror images, the two women decide to execute a radical solution. They agree to switch places. Akane will take Reika’s life of luxury, and Reika will walk away in Akane’s worn-out shoes to find personal freedom.

The story follows the drastic and dramatic consequences of this exchange. Akane steps into a sprawling mansion only to find herself entangled in Reika’s dysfunctional family. Her new husband, Genichiro, is impotent and obsessed with his mother, demanding his wife wear the deceased woman’s dresses for intimacy. She is also surrounded by his younger brothers: the mysterious Genjiro and the troubled Saburo, both of whom have their own agendas and desires. Meanwhile, Reika explores the lower class life with a hedonistic zest Akane never possessed. She is free of societal expectations and begins working at a bar, quickly befriending a photographer named Kumada and embracing her sexuality without the restraints she felt as a married socialite.

As the series progresses, the initial charade deepens into complex emotional arcs. Akane, who is a virgin and very different from the sexually liberal Reika, struggles to maintain the facade while finding herself genuinely drawn to the kind and attentive Genjiro. Their relationship becomes a central pillar of the story, a slow-burn romance built on mutual respect amidst the family chaos. Conversely, Reika discovers that freedom has its own loneliness. As she lives in Akane’s apartment, she develops unexpected feelings for Akane’s reclusive brother, complicating her quest for pure sexual and social liberation.

Several narrative arcs drive the drama forward, including the return of Reika’s former lover from Canada, who threatens to expose the switch, and Genichiro’s dangerous obsession with a hostess who resembles his mother. The story deliberately avoids easy categorization; the characters are presented with realistic, often perverse, flaws. As the tangled web of relationships, misunderstandings, and secret pacts reaches its climax, Reika decides to file for divorce. Ultimately, both women must return to the chaos they created to reclaim their true selves, leading to a conclusion where the initial "impossible desire" for a different life transforms into the possibility of finding genuine happiness exactly where they are wanted.
