Description
A straight man named Apollo, reeling from a recent divorce, takes a job at Shangri-La, an exclusive and ethically managed male brothel located on a remote island paradise. His role is not a sex worker but a teaser, a staff member responsible for warming up the Birds, which is the term for the brothel’s prostitutes, before they meet their clients. The establishment has strict rules for its staff: no orgasms, no penetration, and most critically, no falling in love.

Apollo, who identifies as straight and is initially naive about same-sex intimacy, is assigned to train under Phi, one of the most sought-after and enigmatic Birds at Shangri-La. Despite Apollo’s initial awkwardness and Phi’s provocative and teasing demeanor, a genuine rapport develops between them. Apollo's gentle and considerate nature disarms Phi, while Phi challenges Apollo's understanding of attraction and desire, leading to a deep and complex emotional connection that directly violates the cardinal rule of their workplace.

The narrative's central conflict arises as their professional relationship deepens into mutual possessiveness and romantic feelings. Both men carry significant emotional baggage that fuels their connection. Apollo is heartbroken and financially desperate following his wife's infidelity, while Phi masks a traumatic past marked by abuse, violence, and homophobia, which occasionally surfaces through distressing flashbacks. As Apollo finishes his training, the pair must navigate their growing attachment, risking not only their careers but permanent exile from the only sanctuary Phi has ever known. The story follows their struggle to reconcile their traumatic histories with their unexpected feelings for one another, set against the backdrop of a pleasure house where physical intimacy is transactional but genuine emotion is forbidden.
