Description
Kim Dokja is a solitary office worker whose only escape is reading the web novel Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse. For over a decade, he is the story’s sole reader, following the protagonist Yoo Joonghyuk through countless regressions in a world ravaged by mysterious scenarios. On the day he finally finishes the 3,149th and final chapter, reality abruptly shifts. The streets of Seoul go dark, and a bizarre creature called a dokkaebi appears, announcing the start of the first main scenario. The fiction he has read for ten years has become a deadly reality.

The world as Kim Dokja knew it is replaced by a merciless game for survival, streamed live to an audience of celestial beings known as Constellations. These Constellations watch from the heavens, sponsoring favored humans with coins and power in exchange for entertainment. Unlike everyone else who is plunged into chaos, Kim Dokja holds a singular advantage: he is the only person who knows how this story ends. To survive, he must use his knowledge of the novel’s plot, its hidden scenarios, and its characters’ secrets, all while navigating a world where every choice can lead to immediate death.

The setting is a modern-day Seoul transformed into a series of domed “scenarios.” Survivors are forced to participate in life-or-death quests, starting with the brutal directive to kill a living creature within a set time limit. The only way to grow stronger is to accumulate coins and skills, often by catching the attention of the powerful Constellations who act as patrons. Kim Dokja’s deep understanding of the original work allows him to predict events, take advantage of loopholes, and intervene at crucial moments to recruit powerful allies.

The central conflict arises from Kim Dokja’s attempt to alter the original story to save more people, including characters who were destined to die. He seeks out the protagonist of the novel, Yoo Joonghyuk, a regressor who has grown cold and ruthless after countless failed attempts to reach the end of the scenarios. While Yoo Joonghyuk possesses overwhelming combat strength, he lacks knowledge of the unseen variables. Kim Dokja, a physically weak but brilliant strategist, becomes the unseen puppet master, guiding the protagonist and forming a coalition of survivors. Key allies include Yoo Sangah, a principled co-worker; Lee Hyeonseong, a soldier with a strong sense of justice; and later, other incarnations and even antagonists from the novel’s original timeline.

As the narrative progresses through distinct arcs, the scale of the conflict expands dramatically. Early arcs focus on survival within the Seoul Dome, such as the Escape and Capture the Flag scenarios where alliances are forged and broken. The story soon expands into the Flood Catastrophe and the Abandoned World, pushing survivors beyond the initial zones. A major turning point involves the Demon World, where Kim Dokja must navigate demon nobility and political upheaval during events like the 73rd Demon King and the Demon King Tournament. Later arcs reach a mythic scale, incorporating legendary conflicts such as Gigantomachia and a remake of Journey to the West, forcing the characters to interact directly with the ancient stories of the Constellations themselves. Throughout these arcs, Kim Dokja struggles not only against physical monsters and rival kings but also against the fundamental nature of the scenario system, which demands a tragic, entertaining narrative. His ultimate goal is to reach the final chapter he never read and discover if an ending different from the novel is possible for him and his companions.
