Kozure Dōshin follows the daily life of Tachibana Iori, a timid and often overlooked police constable in Edo-period Japan. Tasked with patrolling the streets and maintaining order, Iori regularly endures scoldings from his superior and sees his fellow constables take credit for his work. At his side is his young son, Mitarō, a boy who marches to his own beat and observes the world with quiet curiosity. Their days are marked by the rhythms of the seasons: the first bonito of spring, the Tanabata festival, year-end cleaning, and snow hare sculptures in winter. Through vignettes of ordinary life, the story explores the quiet bond between a father who struggles to command respect in his profession and a son who offers steady, wordless companionship. The narrative is a spinoff focusing on the childhood of Tachibana, a supporting character from the larger series Saraiya Goyou (House of Five Leaves), and it emphasizes gentle observation of human character and the passage of time rather than dramatic conflict.
