In Azuchi-Momoyama period Japan, the legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon repeatedly outwits the powerful regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After stealing treasures and taunting Hideyoshi from the rooftops of Jurakudai palace, Goemon escapes capture with a theatrical flair reminiscent of kabuki performance. He later infiltrates a banquet disguised as Hideyoshi himself, only to be exposed by the real regent. Wounded and pursued, Goemon has a fleeting encounter with Hideyoshi’s concubine Chacha before being cornered and condemned to death by boiling in an iron cauldron. Displaying the audacity that defines his character, Goemon smashes the cauldron with his treasured smoking pipe, declares he will return to steal the things Hideyoshi loves most, and vanishes into the sky once more. The narrative arc follows this cat-and-mouse rivalry between the ungovernable outlaw and the absolute ruler, punctuated by kabuki-inspired spectacle and the brief, charged meeting with Chacha. The manga was adapted from a contemporary kabuki play and emphasizes dramatic poses, exaggerated expressions, and a flamboyant sense of action.
