Description
Bachi-Bachi BURST is the second part of the sumo manga series by Takahiro Sato, set five years after the conclusion of the original Bachi-Bachi story. The protagonist, Koitaro Samejima, is the son of Karyu, a former ozeki who was expelled from the sumo world after a violent incident and later died. Raised by his father's friend, Koitaro grew up as an uncontrollable delinquent while secretly training in sumo on his own. His entry into professional sumo began when he defeated a makushita-ranked wrestler during a regional tour, leading to his recruitment by the Kuryu stable. At the same time, his rival Oko, the son of former yokozuna Torashiro and a high school sumo champion, joined the Torashiro stable, setting up a generational rivalry. By the time of Bachi-Bachi BURST, Koitaro has risen from the lower ranks to defeat Oko and win the makushita championship. Five years later, Koitaro is a popular lower-ranked maegashira wrestler beloved by fans, having grown strong enough to overpower ozeki in head-on sumo. However, his small physique for a makuuchi wrestler, his difficulty gaining weight, and his all-out fighting style have left his body battered and prone to injury and absences. He steps onto the dohyo with a constant grim resolve that each bout might be his last. Meanwhile, the Kuryu stable, once a small and impoverished stable with only four wrestlers, has rebuilt its strength. Former student yokozuna Tokomatsu and the former hikikomori youth Maruyama Daikichi have joined as new disciples. Along with Koitaro and the wrestler Hakusui, who is now a san'yaku-ranked fighter, the stable has three sekitori and growing popularity. The narrative arc follows Koitaro, Hakusui, and Tokomatsu as they face the turbulent May tournament. Oko is the overwhelming favorite for the championship, and formidable contemporaries such as Tenrai, Ishikawa, other wrestlers with grudges against the Kuryu stable, and yet-unknown contenders aiming for the juryo division all converge in the ring. The story delves into the physical toll on Koitaro, the stable's resurgence, and the intense competition within the sumo hierarchy.
