Description
Edogawa Rampo Ijinkan is a manga anthology that adapts the classic short stories of pioneering Japanese mystery author Edogawa Rampo into a unified, darkly atmospheric narrative. The manga reimagines Rampo’s tales through the lens of a framing device: a writer named Edogawa Rampo, who appears as a character within the stories, shares his morbid fascination with crime and abnormal psychology with a younger man named Goro Shintani. As Rampo recounts each case, the reader is drawn into a world where the line between reality and obsession blurs.

The setting is early twentieth-century Japan, a period of rapid modernization that often conceals grotesque secrets behind everyday facades. The manga’s tone is distinctly gothic and psychological, emphasizing eroticism, grotesquerie, and the nonsensical—a style known as ero-guro. Each arc focuses on a different “abnormal person” (ijin) whose perverse desires lead to violence or madness.

Key storylines include The Stalker in the Attic (Hole Man), where a bored man discovers a secret entrance to the attic of his boarding house and begins spying on the residents, eventually plotting murder. The Human Chair (Seat Man) follows a craftsman who builds a chair with a hidden compartment so he can sit inside it and feel the bodies of those who use it, culminating in a shocking confession. The Case of the Murder on D. Hill introduces the brilliant detective Kogoro Akechi, who unravels a strangling case rooted in sadomasochistic relationships. Other arcs feature the fiendish master of disguise, the Fiend with Twenty Faces, and tales of mirrors, insects, and cursed paintings.

The main recurring characters are the author Edogawa Rampo, portrayed as a perceptive and somewhat detached observer of human depravity, and Kogoro Akechi, the sharp-witted detective who appears in several of the mystery-focused chapters. Their interactions often serve as a bridge between stories. The manga’s narrative arcs are not strictly linear; instead, they form a mosaic of interconnected horrors, each exploring a different facet of obsession, guilt, and erotic fixation. The adaptation is noted for its explicit content and faithful yet dramatically enhanced visualization of Rampo’s original prose, resulting in a cohesive and unsettling journey through the darker corners of the human mind.
