Arare Amano is aware that she is a rain fairy, her mother being something other than entirely human. On her first day of high school, she accidentally steps through a gateway into the Otherworld, the realm of youkai. The veil between the worlds closes behind her, leaving her stranded. Forced to blend in, she becomes a transfer student at Mononoke Girls’ Academy, a boarding school populated entirely by female monsters. Her teacher has a ridiculously long neck, and her classmates include ogres, snow demons, cyclops, ghosts, and living mist.

Arare quickly befriends two fellow students: Kiri, a cheerful twin-tailed cat youkai, and Pero, a long-tongued girl who provides much of the comedy. Together they navigate the absurdities of the school while Arare tries to hide her human nature. Over time, a romantic relationship develops between Arare and Kiri, complicated by a critical rule: if the two fully consummate their feelings, Arare will permanently transform into a youkai. This central tension drives the narrative, mixing heartfelt romance with playful ecchi comedy and slapstick humor.

The story also explores Arare’s own identity as she discovers more about her rain-fairy heritage and what it means to belong in the youkai world.
