A self-described extremely indoor type in her forties, manga artist Chie Shinkyu sets out on a series of solo trips across Japan with no plan except to drink. She wanders through busy streets, follows her instincts into promising bars and eateries, and sometimes visits friends or acquaintances along the way. Sightseeing happens only when it helps build an appetite. The journey takes her to Kagoshima, Himeji, Akita, Yokohama, Matsuyama, Mito, Fukui, and Wakayama, with a brief stop in her home prefecture of Hiroshima. Each stop features local specialties—such as raw hoppy in Noge or ashihoshi dried fish in Wakayama—and the easygoing pleasure of sharing drinks with locals. The manga is an episodic comic essay that captures the unhurried joy of discovering food, drink, and chance encounters across Japan, guided by nothing more than the desire for the next good sip.
