Description
Daikichi, an elderly widower, lives quietly on a small island off the coast of Japan with his beloved cat Tama. After losing his wife several years earlier, Daikichi has settled into a gentle, slow-paced rhythm of daily life, finding comfort in the routines he shares with his cat. The island, modeled after real locations in Aichi Prefecture, is undergoing gradual change as younger people move there and the landscape shifts, but Daikichi remains a constant presence, deeply rooted in his lifelong home. His son Tsuyoshi lives in Tokyo and worries that his father might be lonely, yet Daikichi feels a sense of calm and contentment in his familiar surroundings. The narrative follows the pair through the changing seasons, capturing small, heartwarming moments, the bond between a man and his cat, and the quiet dramas of island life. A notable change occurs when a close friend of Daikichi's goes missing, prompting him to confront his own aging and physical condition, while Tama's own daily routines begin to shift in subtle ways. The manga, created by illustrator Nekomaki, is a comic essay that carefully depicts the lives of a human being and a cat with warm, gentle coloration. It was selected as a Jury Recommendation in the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival and has also been adapted into a live-action film.
