Eighth grader Yayano moves from Tokyo to the coastal town of Atami with her mother, a woman with a history of bad luck in relationships. Their new home is a slightly run-down hotel where Yayano’s mother has found work. Nervous and uncertain about her new life, Yayano is shocked when she stumbles upon her mother performing a pole dance at the hotel. Her mother, now overweight and far from her glamorous youth, was once a celebrated pole dancer at that very venue. Watching her mother dance with uninhibited joy and determination, Yayano feels something stir inside her for the first time. She had always tried to live a quiet, normal life, avoiding attention, but the image of her mother on the pole sparks a new, intense curiosity.

As Yayano struggles to adjust to school and a new town, she finds herself drawn to pole dancing, a pursuit that challenges her self-consciousness and tomboyish desire to stay in the background. Her mother’s passion reignites, and she begins training again, determined to prove she can still shine despite her changed appearance. Yayano’s involvement grows deeper as she meets other young dancers, including the spirited Niko and the skilled Akira, who become her friends and rivals. Together they navigate the competitive world of pole sports. Yayano enters the Junior Pole Championship, where she gives her all but does not place. Rather than being discouraged, the experience fuels her determination.

As she enters her third year of middle school, Yayano’s life becomes more complex. A trip to Hatsushima with Niko and Akira for swimming and island exploration is interrupted when Yayano suddenly disappears, forcing her friends to search for her. Meanwhile, Niko’s own romantic feelings begin to surface.
