Description
In the mid-Showa period, when the rigid gender roles of postwar Japan still made it rare for women to work outside the home, a young female editor named Itokawa Yuri struggles to prove herself in a publishing company that dismisses her ambitions. Raised to value modesty and obedience, Yuri feels trapped by the expectations placed on her both at work and at home. Her life changes when she stumbles into an imported-goods shop and discovers a garter-bisque, a lavish piece of Western lingerie unlike anything she has ever seen. For Yuri, the garment is a revelation: she realizes that underwear can function as an invisible suit of armor, a private source of confidence and self-expression. At that time, Japanese lingerie is treated as a purely practical item, with nearly identical designs and a strict palette limited to white. Inspired by her discovery, Yuri becomes determined to spread the idea that lingerie can be fashionable and empowering.
As she begins to research and advocate for beautiful underwear, Yuri’s path collides with the entrenched conservatism of the industry and the deep-seated sexism of the era. Her own designs are plagiarized by Eden Shoji, the dominant player in the underwear business. Rather than give up, Yuri teams up with a friend to launch a small manufacturer called Lily Workshop. From that base, she fights to create lingerie that is colorful, expressive, and capable of changing how women feel about themselves. The story follows Yuri’s lifelong dedication to her craft, chronicling her battles against corporate theft, societal prejudice, and her own upbringing, all while she works to revolutionize what women wear beneath their clothes.
