Description
In 1998, a passenger plane flying over the Pacific Ocean is caught in a storm and crash‑lands on an uncharted island. The island is home to the Shimabito, a tribe living a savage, ritualistic existence under the rule of a king. The young royal Gamou commands the Shimabito to attack the wrecked aircraft. The survivors are taken captive: women are treated as “harvest” to be distributed among the tribe, and the teenage girl Nanase Ibuki is forcibly designated as the king’s bride. The male passengers are to be executed, a task entrusted to Gamou, whose chest burns with a blood‑red flame of ambition and resentment. As Nanase resists her fate and searches for a way to escape or contact the outside world, Gamou struggles with his own growing attachment to her and the harsh traditions that bind him to his tyrannical father, King Gojou. The story follows both perspectives: Nanase’s desperate bid for freedom alongside a handful of other survivors, and Gamou’s internal conflict as he navigates the brutal politics of the island, including rivalry with his younger brother Korio and a pilgrimage called the Ingo no Kamu where human sacrifices are made. The narrative weaves together tribal power struggles, the clash between modern civilization and primitive law, and the evolving bond between two people forced into an impossible situation. Key arcs include the survivors’ attempts to repair a radio from the wreckage, Korio’s covert alliance with Nanase, and Gamou’s gradual challenge to his father’s authority.
