Description
High school student Makoto Kurokiri has a curse that most people would find hard to believe: he is a super spiritual medium, a person with such an extreme constitution that he unconsciously attracts every manner of malevolent supernatural entity. Since childhood, he has been haunted by ghosts, spirits, and monsters, never finding a moment of peace. This forced him into a lonely, withdrawn existence, desperate for an ordinary life. When he transfers to Magayama High School, he hopes to finally escape his torment, but his ability immediately draws a host of disturbing apparitions.
Another first-year student at the school, Michiru Tachibana, is a bright and energetic girl with an all-consuming passion for the occult. She has been fascinated by paranormal phenomena since she was young and is an enthusiastic member of the school's Occult Club. However, there is a peculiar twist to her obsession: she has absolutely no spiritual sensitivity. In fact, her lack of sensitivity is so extreme that she possesses an involuntary and incredibly powerful exorcism ability, unknowingly dispelling any nearby spirit just by being near it. When she hears disturbing rumors about the new transfer student, her curiosity is piqued and she approaches him, inviting him to join the Occult Club.
Makoto initially refuses, wary of involving anyone else. But when Michiru accidentally and effortlessly exorcises a dog spirit that has been haunting him, as well as several other lurking entities, he realizes that her presence is the only time he has ever felt safe. Seeing her as the one person who can free him from his torment, he changes his mind and joins the club, hoping to befriend her and finally experience the normal, youthful life he has always wanted.
The Occult Club is a small and struggling group, facing dissolution due to a lack of members. It is advised by the passionate and intense Mamiya-sensei, a former member who is determined to lead the club to the national high school occult club tournament. With Makoto's arrival, the club gains new life, joined by other unique members such as the poverty-stricken and cynical upperclassman Teruo Kusaka, who has a side business dealing in dubious occult goods, and Aiko Onizaki, a ghost member who has a crush on Mamiya-sensei but becomes ill from nervousness whenever she gets close to him.
The story unfolds as a youth horror comedy, balancing genuinely creepy supernatural encounters with warm humor and budding romance. The central dynamic is the perfect, unintentional symbiosis between Makoto, who draws in the ghosts, and Michiru, who unconsciously blasts them away. Each episode typically features the club tackling a new paranormal case or urban legend, from malicious apparitions in forbidden areas and cursed games to classic tales like the kappa and the red cloak. Makoto's dream of a normal life begins to come true as he makes real friends, experiences the thrill of club activities, and develops a tender, unspoken affection for Michiru, who for her part is completely oblivious to her own power and remains frustrated that she still cannot capture a proper ghost in a photograph. The series blends heartfelt character growth with escalating supernatural threats, all while maintaining a lighthearted, comedic tone.
