Description
It had been months since the local Chinese restaurant closed its doors, so when Shinji Naruto finally worked up the courage to peek inside again, he found it had been transformed into a flashy, garish storefront. To his relief, the old signboard was still there, and the interior remained the familiar, modest restaurant he remembered. The surprise came from behind the counter: the new owner was a young gal with bleached hair and a bright smile, named Renge. She had taken over the shop, once run by her grandmother, and was determined to keep it alive despite having almost no experience cooking Chinese food.

Shinji, a timid man working as a cleaner at a general affairs company, had a personal connection to the restaurant. During a period of unemployment, when he had no money and would loiter outside, Renge’s grandmother had once treated him to a curry-fried rice dish. Now he returns as a regular customer, drawn by the warmth of the place and the unexpected charm of its new proprietor. Renge’s cooking is inventive but often unorthodox—her early attempts include a “Tamagoyaki Tenshinhan” that swaps the usual crab omelet for a fried egg, though it somehow still tastes good. Over time, she refines her skills and begins to create a unique menu of “gal Chinese” dishes, such as the Renge Special (a platter of sixteen bite-sized Chinese dishes) and playful creations like “OiEBI” (shrimp chili with crispy shrimp snacks stirred into the sauce).

The story follows the daily life around the restaurant, now renamed Mirakuru Ken (a pun on “miracle” and the original name). Renge’s cheerful, sociable nature attracts a colorful cast of regulars. Among them is Dr. Hayama Ryo, a skilled surgeon who moonlights as an aspiring erotic manga artist and often nurses her frustrations over a drink at the counter. Another is Okumura Shiori, a quiet librarian who also works as a queen at an SM club; she becomes a frequent visitor after meeting Shinji at the library during his search for dinosaur books. These eccentric patrons add both comedy and unexpected entanglements to the restaurant’s everyday scenes.

As the chapters unfold, both Renge and Shinji experience gradual personal growth. Renge moves from clumsy beginner to a more confident cook, even surprising herself with how far she has come. Shinji, inspired by Renge’s dedication to her dream, begins to pursue his own long-buried passion: studying dinosaurs. He starts researching seriously, and later receives an offer of full-time employment at his workplace. The narrative weaves together food, budding romance, and the quiet transformations of its characters, all framed within the small, cozy world of a neighborhood Chinese restaurant that is anything but ordinary.
