Shuko Maeda, a twenty-eight-year-old single office worker with an ordinary job and no boyfriend, lives in a shared house in Tokyo with three close friends. The house is also home to Eika Matsuki, a driven career woman whose life centers on work; Misaki Kawaseda, a singer-songwriter and a hopeless romantic who chases love; and Shio Momoyama, a laid-back freelance worker who keeps a relaxed approach to both work and private life. Together the four women drink, complain, and support each other through the daily grind, believing that as long as they have fun together, everything is fine.

But as they drift through their late twenties, the looming milestone of turning thirty forces each of them to confront uncomfortable questions about what society expects of them and what they truly want. Shuko begins to feel the pressure as friends around her get married and she wonders if she can be happy alone. Eika struggles to prove herself in a male-dominated office where her competence is constantly questioned. Misaki discovers that a man she considered her boyfriend for two years had no idea they were dating, spurring her to reevaluate her romantic ideals. Shio, the most easygoing of the group, faces the practical reality of juggling freelance work with mounting bills while her mother worries about her being single.

As the story unfolds across the three volumes and twenty-four chapters, each woman takes steps toward change. Shuko hesitantly enters the world of dating, Eika considers a job transfer that would uproot her life, Misaki begins a new relationship, and Shio confronts her mother’s concern about her solitary future.
