Description
In the northern lands, war is endless. The soil is soaked with blood, and mercenary bands move from battlefield to battlefield, selling their swords to whichever lord can pay. Almark is the son of Reiz, the vice-captain of the elite Black Wolf Riders, and has grown up amid the clang of steel and the stench of death. By the age of nine he has already taken lives in combat, proving himself a capable fighter despite his quiet, observant nature.

Reiz, however, sees a different future for his son. After rescuing an old man who turns out to be the headmaster of the Norkh Institute for Magic in the distant, peaceful South, Reiz extracts a promise: Almark will one day attend the academy and become a magician. Years later, when Almark is eleven and has survived a near‑fatal wound, Reiz sends him south alone—not as a rejection, but as a hard‑earned chance at a safer life.

Almark arrives at the Norkh Institute carrying nothing but a soldier’s discipline and a rusty sword. The institute is a world apart: a place of tranquil gardens, noble‑born students, and magic that flows from careful study rather than raw survival. Almark has never cast a single spell, and his Northern origins mark him as a barbarian in the eyes of many. The prideful noble Tohrk Shifei quickly becomes his first real rival, sneering at the “talentless Northerner.” Yet Almark’s battlefield instincts and quiet determination earn him unexpected allies—among them the headmaster, who believes in his latent magical talent, and a handful of classmates who see beyond his rough exterior.

The story traces Almark’s gradual transformation from a boy who knows only the sword into a budding mage, without ever losing the grit and pragmatism that the North forged in him. He learns the fundamentals of magic, faces prejudice and the rigid class structure of the academy, and takes part in exercises that push him into dangerous encounters—both with hostile creatures and with the darker currents that linger beneath the South’s placid surface. Later arcs, such as the Northern Assassin incident and the exploration of a dark ruin, force Almark to reconcile his mercenary past with his growing magical abilities, and to confront threats that the academy’s sheltered students are ill‑prepared for.

At its heart, the manga follows a boy carrying a father’s heavy expectation: to become someone who truly matters. Almark’s journey is about belonging—to a school that distrusts him, to a homeland he left behind, and to a future that lies somewhere between the icy north and the sunlit south.
