After rescuing an old man who turns out to be the headmaster of the Norkh Institute for Magic in the distant, peaceful South, Reiz extracts a promise: Almark will one day attend the academy and become a magician. Years later, when Almark is eleven and has survived a near‑fatal wound, Reiz sends him south alone—not as a rejection, but as a hard‑earned chance at a safer life.

Almark arrives at the Norkh Institute carrying nothing but a soldier’s discipline and a rusty sword.
