Suguru Tsutsui is a young man who has just failed his university entrance exam. He had planned to celebrate his acceptance by losing his virginity with his girlfriend, Hazuki Yoshimura, but when she learns he actually failed, she breaks up with him in anger. Dejected, Suguru wanders to a riverbank where he encounters a lonely girl. Later, he arrives at a boarding house he intends to move into, only to find that the same girl, Urara Asagiri, is already there. The boarding house is located above a show pub called Scarabaza, where Urara works as a dancer. She has no family and performs on stage in the hope of finding her parents. Feeling sympathy for her situation, Suguru decides to give her the room and prepares to live in a small shack on the roof. Guilt-ridden, Urara tries to leave, but Suguru insists she stay. Meanwhile, he reconnects with Hazuki and brings her back to the room for sex, only for Urara to walk in on them. Learning that Urara was about to leave, Suguru stops her, much to Hazuki's fury. This sets the stage for an uneasy triangular relationship among Suguru, his ex-girlfriend Hazuki, and his new roommate Urara. The tension draws in the eccentric staff and performers of Scarabaza, who become entangled in the trio's personal dramas. Over the course of the story, Suguru continues to study for another chance at university while navigating his shifting feelings for both women. The narrative progresses through a series of intimate and emotional conflicts, culminating in the day of the next entrance exam results, where the futures of all three characters hang in the balance.
