Manga
Description
Sou, a man born and raised in Tokyo, and his wife Mia, a Canadian-born Japanese American, share a common longing: neither feels they have a true hometown. Determined to find a place they can call their own, the couple embarks on a unique journey across Japan without ever leaving their home. They use the furusato nozei hometown tax donation system to order regional specialty products as return gifts. Each chapter centers on a different ingredient or dish, such as grilled pork shabu-shabu, onions from Awaji Island, maple ham, or silver salmon pickled in sweet sake lees. Through these deliveries, the couple samples the culinary identity of various municipalities from Nagano to Hokkaido, imagining what life might be like in each location. The manga follows their evolving relationship with food, their occasional encounters with unfamiliar or disliked ingredients, and their growing appreciation for the diversity of Japanese regional culture. The narrative focuses on the small, everyday moments of tasting, cooking, and discussing each item, gradually building a picture of the places they might one day call home.
