Manga
Description
The protagonist, a manga artist depicted as a bipedal wolf, has struggled for years with a nocturnal, sleep-deprived lifestyle that has led to a host of chronic physical complaints: low-grade fever, cold sensitivity, back pain, shoulder stiffness, constipation, migraines, irritability, and depressive moods. Feeling that she cannot go on ignoring these issues, she decides to research self-care methods and discovers the principles of kampo (Chinese herbal medicine) and yakuzen (medicinal cooking). The story follows her as she learns about the thermal nature and energetic properties of everyday ingredients—such as bananas for cooling, beans for draining dampness, pork for moisturizing, and pumpkin for warming—and begins incorporating them into simple, accessible recipes.

The manga is structured as a lighthearted gourmet essay that moves through the seasons. In the first volume, each chapter tackles a specific seasonal concern: managing summer heat with congee, combating autumn dryness with eggs and pork, relieving winter chill with pumpkin and beef, and easing spring pollen allergies with onion. Later chapters shift focus to common ailments irrespective of season, including edema, insomnia, fatigue, constipation, and low-grade fever, offering recipes using ingredients like yam, honey, tofu, sweet potato, cabbage, and tofu. Throughout, the protagonist is accompanied by her elderly calico cat, who offers silent commentary and companionship, and each chapter includes a concise advice column from the supervising kanpo expert Sakurai Daisuke, who explains the core concepts of five-phase theory, qi-blood-fluid balance, and the seasonal correspondences of the organs.

Written and illustrated by the manga artist Gogo, known for her earlier essay comics such as Sleeping Nights I Bake Cake, the series is a gentle, low-pressure introduction to medicinal eating. It emphasizes that perfect adherence is not the goal; instead, small, sustainable changes—like adding one nourishing dish to a meal—can gradually ease chronic discomfort. The narrative is personal and self-deprecating, blending moments of physical struggle with the quiet satisfaction of discovering a meal that genuinely helps. The setting is the author’s own home kitchen and daily life, and the story’s arc is not a dramatic conflict but a slow, honest process of learning to listen to one’s body and care for it through food.
