Manga
Description
In a world where humans and humanoid cats coexist, cats are regarded as cute objects rather than autonomous beings. Shy cat Hachisuke struggles with being treated this way and has difficulty fitting into a society that sees him as something to be admired and touched rather than respected as a person. His friends Mike, Kurono, and Makio each face their own forms of prejudice: Mike is pressured by his father to take up a job as a maneki neko, a role that blends pet and sexual object; Kurono works security but is constantly doubted by customers; Makio, a popular cat model, worries that his own work might perpetuate the very stereotypes that hold them all back. The story unfolds through everyday encounters that highlight harassment, microaggressions, and well-meaning but clumsy allyship. A human named Hitomi gropes Hachisuke after mistaking his purr for consent, while their boss Yoshihito overcorrects in his attempts to be an ally. As the characters navigate these situations, the manga uses the cat‑human dynamic as a transparent lens to examine how women and other marginalized groups experience objectification, workplace discrimination, and the pressure to conform to expected roles. There is no neat resolution; instead, each character grapples with their own complicity or vulnerability, and the humans around them begin to recognize the weight of their assumptions.
