Description
"King of Thorn" is a science fiction manga series written and illustrated by Yuji Iwahara. The story is set in a near-future world where a deadly virus known as the Medusa has spread globally, causing victims to petrify and die. In response, a select group of individuals is chosen to undergo cryogenic sleep in a facility called the Cold Sleep Capsule Center, located in a remote Scottish castle. The hope is that these individuals will awaken in a future where a cure for the virus has been discovered.
The protagonist, Kasumi Ishiki, is a young woman who volunteers for the cryogenic program after being diagnosed with Medusa. Alongside her are other participants, including Marco Owen, a former soldier, and Shizuku Ishiki, Kasumi’s twin sister. The group is placed into suspended animation, but when they awaken, they find the facility overrun with monstrous creatures and vegetation, suggesting a significant passage of time and catastrophic changes to the world.
As the survivors navigate the treacherous environment, they uncover clues about the true nature of the Medusa virus and the experiments conducted at the facility. The narrative delves into themes of survival, identity, and the consequences of scientific experimentation. Flashbacks reveal the personal histories of the characters, including Kasumi’s strained relationship with her sister and Marco’s troubled past, adding depth to their motivations and actions.
The story takes a surreal turn as the characters encounter bizarre phenomena, including time distortions and alternate realities. These elements challenge their perceptions of reality and force them to confront their deepest fears and regrets. The Medusa virus itself is revealed to be more complex than initially thought, with ties to ancient myths and advanced biotechnology.
Throughout the series, the characters face moral dilemmas and internal conflicts, particularly as they uncover the truth about the facility’s purpose and the fate of humanity. The narrative builds toward a climactic resolution that ties together the mysteries of the Medusa virus, the facility’s experiments, and the characters’ personal journeys. The ending leaves room for interpretation, blending elements of hope and ambiguity as the survivors grapple with the consequences of their choices and the uncertain future of humanity.
