Buronson
Description
Buronson is the primary pen name of Yoshiyuki Okamura, a highly influential Japanese manga writer born on June 16, 1947, in Saku, Nagano. He is also known by the pen name Sho Fumimura, which he typically uses for comedy series and specific collaborations. Before entering the manga industry, Buronson served in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force as a radar mechanic. After leaving the service in 1970, he became an assistant to manga artist Hiroshi Motomiya and made his own writing debut in 1972 with the one-shot Gorō-kun Tōjō.
Buronson is best known as the original creator and writer of the landmark martial arts manga Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken), which was illustrated by Tetsuo Hara. Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1983 to 1988, the series became a global phenomenon and is one of the best-selling manga in history, with over 100 million copies in circulation. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows the martial artist Kenshiro as he protects the weak. This success led to multiple anime adaptations, including the original 1984 television series by Toei Animation, which ran for 152 episodes. His creative partnership with Tetsuo Hara continued with the prequel series Fist of the Blue Sky (Souten no Ken), which was serialized from 2001 to 2010. While Buronson served as an advisor on the manga, the story and art were handled by Hara. This prequel story was later adapted into the anime series Fist of the Blue Sky Regenesis, which premiered in April 2018.
Beyond the Fist of the North Star franchise, Buronson has a prolific career spanning multiple genres and notable collaborations. Before his greatest success, he first found fame with the hardboiled detective series Doberman Deka (1975–1979). He has worked extensively with artist Ryoichi Ikegami on acclaimed series such as Sanctuary (1990–1995), Strain (1996–1998), and Heat (1998–2004), with the latter winning the Shogakukan Manga Award for general manga in 2002. His other significant collaborations include working with Kentaro Miura on the short series King of Wolves and Japan. While he is the creator of the original Fist of the North Star universe, later spinoff series such as Legends of the Dark King: A Fist of the North Star Story (which focuses on the character Raoh) were written by Yuko Osada, and the comedic parody series DD Hokuto no Ken was written and illustrated by Kajio.
Buronson's work is characterized by a focus on masculine ideals, loyalty, and survival, often set against gritty, violent backdrops, from post-apocalyptic wastelands to the world of organized crime. He received a Special Award at the 2021 Saito Takao Awards for his continued contributions to manga, including his efforts in training younger artists. In his hometown, he established a scholarship program and launched the Buronson 100-Hour Manga Academy to nurture future creators.
