Description
The official tagline for the series says it all: Three meals a day included, company housing provided, no experience necessary. In the nuclear-scorched wasteland of the year 199X, the young man Nobu is desperately seeking work. He finds an opening with the most dangerous employer in the post-apocalyptic world, the army of the fearsome conqueror Ken-Oh, also known as Raoh. Nobu quickly discovers that his new job as a low-ranking grunt comes with an extremely high mortality rate, where the number of soldiers who die on the job exceeds the number of applicants for the position. This darkly comedic spin-off shifts the focus away from legendary martial artists and epic battles to the daily struggles of the disposable infantry trying to survive their shifts.
The central character is Nobu, an ordinary man who just wants a steady paycheck and ends up as cannon fodder in Ken-Oh’s legion. He is joined by fellow grunts including Zaku and Buzz as they navigate a workplace filled with absurd dangers, incompetent middle managers, and the constant threat of being on the receiving end of a fatal secret technique. The series features appearances from various memorable minor characters of the original Fist of the North Star universe, such as Uighur, the warden of the prison city Cassandra, and the fanatical Holy Emperor’s Army soldier known for shouting Disinfect the filth. The narrative unfolds through short, fast-paced episodes that parody the iconic moments and tropes of the classic manga, portraying the grandiose schemes of Ken-Oh’s army from the ground-level perspective of the unlucky soldiers who have to carry them out.
As the series progresses, Nobu and his companions encounter a parade of uniquely colorful zakos, the Japanese term for small-fry or underlings. The narrative arcs follow their ill-fated assignments, from patrolling the wasteland disguised as old ladies to attempting to enforce Ken-Oh’s brutal will on villages, all while dodging the god-like warriors who routinely decimate their ranks. The show maintains a satirical look at corporate work culture through the lens of a violent dictatorship, exploring themes of survival, camaraderie, and the absurdity of being a nameless villain in someone else's heroic saga. The anime is produced by studio Do-Raku, with Hiro Shimono voicing the lead role of Nobu, and premiered in January 2026 as an adaptation of Hiroshi Kurao's manga spin-off of the same name.
