Maxwell Powers
Description
Maxwell Powers is an American voice actor, narrator, and television host based in Japan. Born on December 27, 1983, in Oakland, California, he began studying Japanese at the age of fifteen. His language skills led to him being awarded a scholarship by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to attend a Japanese university in 2003, where he studied international politics and Japanese language and culture at Sophia University. He initially began his professional career as a translator working in manga and anime. His entry into voice acting occurred in 2006 when he was hired to supervise a narrator for a recording session but was ultimately asked by the director to replace the narrator, a move that launched his career in narration and voice acting.
Powers has built a diverse career in Japanese entertainment, working extensively in anime, video games, and as a television host. He is particularly known for his work with NHK, having hosted the educational television series, radio show, and smartphone application VocabRider since 2016, where he provides explanations of the English language in Japanese. He has also served as a host and reporter for NHK World-Japan's Catch Japan and presented at the 2020 Paralympic Games closing ceremony.
In anime, Powers has secured a number of prominent roles. He voices the character Genbu in the Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion franchise, appearing in Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion the Animation, the film Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion: Mirai Kara Shinsoku no ALFA-X, and the sequel series Shinkalion Z. He plays the role of Sergeant Verde Buster Gundam in the 2021 series SD Gundam World Heroes. Powers also voices the recurring character Rotom Drone in the long-running Pokémon television series. His other anime credits include Suzuki in Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress and its subsequent film adaptation, and the announcer in the film Kuroko's Basketball The Movie: Last Game.
Powers' voice work extends significantly into video games. He provides the English voice for the character Asimov in the Azure Striker Gunvolt OVA and reprises the role in Azure Striker Gunvolt 3. He is also the system voice for several major fighting game franchises, including Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and The King of Fighters XIV and The King of Fighters XV. Other game credits include Wild Fang in Time Crisis 5 and Dwight Méndez in the Japanese version of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, for which he performed English dialogue.
Beyond acting, Powers also contributes as a recording director, notably for the English version of the Azure Striker Gunvolt ONA. He has worked as a master of ceremonies for various events, including mixed martial arts tournaments for World Victory Road's Sengoku Raiden Championship and for Aniplex Online Fest. Powers has also taken on live-action acting roles, such as the recurring character Max in the Amazon Prime Video series The Benza. His work is characterized by his distinctive, energetic announcer-style voice, which has led to frequent casting as narrators and system voices across various media.
