Kugane Maruyama
Description
Kugane Maruyama is a Japanese author best known as the creator of the Overlord series. He began his writing career under the pseudonym Muchimuchi Puririn before changing it to Kugane Maruyama at the time of his professional publication debut. Before achieving success with his own work, he contributed a short story titled Dawn to the Type-Moon visual novel Kagetsu Tohya.
Maruyama initially posted the story that would become Overlord on the internet. The series, which follows a powerful skeletal wizard named Ainz Ooal Gown trapped in a game world, was inspired by his experiences playing Dungeons & Dragons with friends. The property proved successful enough to be adapted into multiple media, including a manga adaptation by Satoshi Ōshio and Hugin Miyama, and an anime produced by Madhouse. Maruyama is credited as the original creator for all these projects. The original light novel series is illustrated by the artist so-bin, with whom Maruyama has frequently collaborated and made public appearances.
Maruyama is directly credited as the original creator for several major anime productions. These include the main Overlord television anime, the compilation films Gekijouban Soushuuhen Overlord, the chibi-style comedy spinoff Ple Ple Pleiades, and Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom. He is also credited for his role in the crossover chibi comedy series Isekai Quartet, which unites characters from Overlord with those from other popular isekai franchises. He is listed as the original creator for Overlord in the first, second, and third seasons of Isekai Quartet, as well as the theatrical film Gekijouban Isekai Quartet ~Another World~.
Within the anime and light novel industry, Maruyama is known to have friendships with other prominent isekai authors, including Natsume Akatsuki (Konosuba), Tappei Nagatsuki (Re:Zero), and Carlo Zen (Saga of Tanya the Evil). Their collaborative relationship facilitated the creation of the Isekai Quartet crossover project. Maruyama's writing style is noted for capturing the mindset of players immersed in Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games, often exploring how power and the lack of real-world consequences can impact a character's morality.
