Description
Natsuki Kizu, born July 14, 1992, is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the series Given. She began her career as a doujinshi artist, producing fan comics for popular series under the circle name Gusari before making her professional debut. Her first commercially published work was Yukimura-sensei to Kei-kun in 2013, followed by a collection of short stories titled Links in 2014.
Kizu is best known for Given, a boys love manga that began serialization in the bimonthly magazine Chéri+ in April 2013. The series follows four students who form an amateur rock band, exploring their dual romantic relationships and personal struggles with grief and self-discovery. The manga concluded its main story in March 2023 after nine compiled volumes, and a sequel series titled Given: 10th Mix was serialized from January 2024 to March 2025.
The success of Given led to multiple adaptations. An 11-episode anime television series produced by Studio Lerche aired on Fuji TVs Noitamina programming block from July to September 2019, marking the first boys love series to air in that timeslot. A theatrical anime film was released in August 2020, focusing on the relationship between characters Akihiko and Haruki. A live-action television drama aired in 2021. Additionally, an original animation DVD titled Given - On the Other Hand was released on December 1, 2021, bundled with the seventh volume of the manga. This side story further explores the relationship between protagonists Mafuyu and Ritsuka. An audio drama adaptation was also produced between 2016 and 2020.
In interviews, Kizu has stated that she wanted to create a manga with a central element beyond romance, and she chose music because of her personal love for it. She has noted that she has no direct band experience but conducted research and interviews to maintain realism in the band setting. Kizu has cited Banana Fish as a significant influence on her work. She studied video in university and has said this background influenced her visual storytelling approach.
