Description
"Given" is a Japanese anime series based on the manga by Natsuki Kizu, blending elements of romance, music, and drama. The story centers around Mafuyu Satou, a reserved high school student who carries a guitar but cannot play it. One day, he encounters Ritsuka Uenoyama, a talented guitarist and member of a small band. Noticing Mafuyu's broken guitar strings, Ritsuka reluctantly agrees to repair them and, after hearing Mafuyu sing, invites him to join the band as the vocalist. This decision sets the stage for the group's journey as they navigate their musical aspirations and personal relationships.
The band, initially consisting of Ritsuka, bassist Haruki Nakayama, and drummer Akihiko Kaji, begins to evolve with Mafuyu's addition. As they practice and prepare for live performances, the dynamics between the members deepen. Ritsuka, initially aloof, becomes increasingly drawn to Mafuyu, whose haunting voice and emotional depth hint at a painful past. Mafuyu's lyrics and performances reveal his unresolved grief over the death of his former boyfriend, Yuki Yoshida, whose suicide left him grappling with guilt and confusion.
Parallel to the central narrative, the series explores the relationship between Akihiko and Haruki. Akihiko, a skilled but emotionally detached drummer, is entangled in a complicated affair with his ex-girlfriend, Ugetsu Murata, a violin prodigy. As Akihiko struggles to reconcile his feelings for Ugetsu and his growing affection for Haruki, the series delves into themes of love, loss, and self-discovery.
The anime balances its focus on the band's musical journey with the emotional growth of its characters. Mafuyu and Ritsuka's relationship gradually shifts from mentor-student to something more intimate, as Ritsuka helps Mafuyu confront his past and find his voice. The series portrays their connection with subtlety, emphasizing the importance of communication and mutual support. Similarly, Akihiko and Haruki's storyline highlights the complexities of love and the challenges of moving on from past relationships.
Music plays a central role in the narrative, serving as both a plot device and a means of emotional expression. The band's performances and rehearsals are pivotal moments that drive character development and plot progression. The anime's soundtrack, featuring original songs performed by the characters, enhances the storytelling and underscores the emotional weight of key scenes.
"Given" is a character-driven series that explores themes of grief, healing, and the transformative power of music. Its portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships is handled with sensitivity, focusing on the characters' emotions and experiences rather than relying on stereotypes. The anime's concise storytelling and well-developed characters make it a compelling exploration of love and self-expression within the framework of a musical drama.
