Description
Mafuyu Sato is a quiet, introverted high school student whose traumatic childhood abuse conditioned him toward silence, making verbal emotional expression difficult. He carries profound grief from the suicide of his childhood friend and first love, Yuki Yoshida; Yuki's parting gift, a Gibson ES-330 guitar, remains a poignant reminder. This loss left Mafuyu emotionally frozen, plagued by nightmares and an inability to process guilt or loneliness.

Physically, Mafuyu stands 173 cm tall with reddish-orange tousled hair, pale skin, and subdued green eyes conveying a distant melancholy. His reserved nature is reflected in a preference for muted-toned, casual clothing: light brown cardigans over white shirts, dark gray pants, and lace-up boots. Later appearances show varied outfits, including oversized T-shirts with bold red sneakers or coordinated "twin looks" with childhood friend Hiiragi Kashima.

His personality blends apparent shyness with unexpected bluntness when he speaks. Highly perceptive, he accurately discerns hidden emotions in others—like Haruki Nakayama's feelings for Akihiko Kaji or Shizusumi Yagi's affection for Hiiragi—and confronts uncomfortable truths directly. Despite verbal reticence, he is a supportive listener, enabling confidences from figures like Ugetsu Murata or Shizusumi. He occasionally displays cheekiness or flirtatiousness, aware of his effect on love interest Ritsuka Uenoyama.

Mafuyu's development centers on music as emotional catharsis. After encountering Ritsuka, who repairs Yuki's guitar, he joins Ritsuka's band as a vocalist. Though inexperienced, he possesses natural singing talent and masters guitar basics quickly. His breakthrough comes during the band's first live performance, where he improvises lyrics expressing grief for Yuki, leading to a backstage kiss with Ritsuka and the start of their relationship. The band names itself "Given" in homage to Yuki's guitar. This performance marks his transition from denial into active grief stages—anger and bargaining—as he confronts unresolved trauma.

Later arcs reveal lingering vulnerabilities. When Ritsuka temporarily supports Hiiragi's band "syh," Mafuyu fears repeating past abandonment patterns, recalling how Yuki's band commitments preceded their estrangement. Witnessing syh's performance reaffirms music's redemptive power, strengthening his resolve to continue singing. His perceptiveness extends to mediating others' relationships, encouraging resolutions between Akihiko and Haruki or recognizing Hiiragi and Shizusumi's mutual feelings.

Key relationships include his bond with Kedama, his Pomeranian—a gift from his mother, a professional shogi player—and his complex friendship with Hiiragi and Shizusumi, who share his history with Yuki. His romance with Ritsuka evolves cautiously, with Mafuyu initiating confessions despite self-doubt. In spin-offs like "Hiiragi Mix" and "Umi e," he navigates renewed connections with his past while solidifying his place in the band and with Ritsuka.

Mafuyu's journey concludes with gradual healing: he learns to articulate emotions through music rather than words, accepts his grief coexisting with new love, and moves toward self-acceptance without erasing Yuki's memory. His arc underscores themes of trauma, silent resilience, and art as a conduit for emotional release.
