Description
Osamu Nishi is a Japanese manga artist born on April 22, 1992, in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Nishi began drawing illustrations during high school but had no formal experience in creating manga. After graduating and considering different career paths, she decided to try drawing manga professionally. She participated in the Tokiwaso Project, and in 2011, her debut work, a one-shot titled Shonen K, received an honorable mention in the Jump SQ Monthly Awards and was published in Jump SQ.19 Autumn, marking her debut as a manga artist. At the age of 19, she moved to Tokyo to focus on her career.
Nishi's early published works include the one-shots Rental Butler in 2012, GetMarry in 2012, and Dead an Dead in 2016. Her first serialized work was Hotel Helheim, a dark fantasy story published in Jump Square from November 2014 to September 2015. From her debut through Hotel Helheim, her stories primarily featured dark fantasy themes.
For her next project, Nishi decided to create a brighter, more cheerful manga. During discussions with her editor, she conceived the idea of an angelic boy enrolling in a school for demons. Her editor showed great interest in the concept, and Nishi completed the plot and draft in just a few days. The editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen Champion at the time decided to begin serialization immediately upon seeing the material. In March 2017, Weekly Shonen Champion began publishing Mairimashita! Iruma-kun, also known as Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun. This series became her most notable and successful work.
An anime adaptation of Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun was produced by Bandai Namco Pictures. The first season aired from October 2019 to March 2020, the second season premiered in April 2021, and the third season concluded in March 2023. A fourth season is scheduled for release. Nishi is credited as the original creator and for the original character design for the anime series.
Beyond her flagship series, Nishi has been involved in several spin-offs and related projects. She is credited with the original concept for Makai no Shuyaku wa Wareware da!, which began serialization in 2020. She also authored the spin-off Mairimashita! Iruma-kun Gaiden: Kalego-hen and is credited with the original concept for Mairimashita! Iruma-kun if: Episode of Mafia. In September 2024, Nishi began serializing Madan no Ichi in Weekly Shonen Jump, serving as the story writer with illustrations by Shiro Usazaki.
Regarding her pen name, Nishi chose Osamu because her birthday contains the numbers two and four, because she liked the character from her older brother's name, and because she was influenced by the name of Osamu Tezuka. She has also written lyrics for songs related to her works, including the Demon School Babyls School Anthem and Devi-Cue, under the name os.nishi. Nishi often represents herself in her work and on social media as a yellow, fluffy cat character. This cat appears in interlude stories within the Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun manga and makes cameo appearances during the opening and ending credits of the anime series.
