Hideaki Sorachi

Description
Hideaki Sorachi is a Japanese manga artist born on May 25, 1979, in Hokkaido, Japan, best known as the creator of the long-running series Gintama. His interest in manga began in childhood, though he temporarily abandoned his aspirations after his father ridiculed his work. After graduating from a university in Hokkaido with a degree in advertising, he found himself unemployed and returned to drawing manga as a career path. His debut work, a one-shot titled Dandelion, earned an honorable mention in the Tenkaichi Manga Award in 2002, which helped launch his professional career.

Sorachi’s major work is the manga Gintama, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2003 and concluded in June 2019. The series is a science-fiction period comedy set in an alternate version of Japan’s Edo period, where aliens known as the Amanto have conquered the country. The story follows the samurai Gintoki Sakata and his companions at the Yorozuya odd-jobs business. The initial concept for the series was shaped by an editor’s suggestion to capitalize on the popularity of a contemporary television drama about the Shinsengumi police force, though Sorachi combined this with his own ideas, ultimately creating a work that blends historical figures with science fiction and surreal humor. The manga achieved significant commercial success, with over 55 million copies in circulation.

The Gintama manga has spawned a substantial number of anime adaptations. The first television anime series aired from 2006 to 2010, followed by several subsequent seasons and original video animations. The franchise includes multiple anime films, such as Gintama: The Movie (2010) and Gintama: The Final (2021). In the 2020s, as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary, a series of compilation films titled Gintama on Theater 2D were released in Japanese theaters, which re-edit popular arcs from the television anime, including the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc, the Kabukicho Four Devas Arc, and the Kintama-hen.

Sorachi is also credited with the creation of a spin-off series titled 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-sensei, which re-imagines the characters of Gintama in a high school setting with Gintoki as a teacher. The series began as a collection of light novels written by Tomohito Ōsaki, with illustrations and original character designs by Sorachi. An anime television series adaptation of this spin-off premiered in October 2025. Sorachi’s other works include several one-shot manga, such as Shirokuro, 13, and Bankara, which were later compiled in volumes of Gintama.

Sorachi’s artistic identity is characterized by a distinctive style of comedy that frequently employs satire of Japanese pop culture, vulgar humor, and metafictional gags. He often represents himself in his manga and its adaptations as a gorilla, a persona he also uses for public appearances and author photos. His writing is noted for balancing absurdist comedy with serious dramatic arcs, and he has stated a deliberate intent to subvert conventional character archetypes, particularly in his creation of the female lead Kagura. In the industry, Sorachi is recognized for his influence and the sustained popularity of his work; his former assistants include Kenta Shinohara, creator of Sket Dance.
