Taichi Saotome
Description
Taichi Saotome is a Japanese actor and voice actor born on September 24, 1991, in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. He is affiliated with the entertainment agency LDH JAPAN. Saotome began his performing career at the age of four as the second-generation lead of the family-run theater troupe, Gekidan Sujaku, which specializes in a form of popular theater known as taishū engeki. Growing up within this theatrical environment, he trained extensively in onnagata, the art of female impersonation derived from kabuki, and performed these roles from a young age. His early stage work earned him recognition for his graceful and captivating presence, including the nickname Prince of the Sidelong Glance.
While his primary career has been in live-action stage, film, and television, Saotome has also contributed his voice to anime projects. His most notable voice role is Lio Fotia in the 2019 animated film Promare, produced by Studio Trigger. He voiced the character in the main film as well as in the accompanying short film, Promare: Lio-hen. In this high-energy science fiction story, he portrayed the passionate leader of a group of pyrokinetic mutants called the Burnish. Prior to Promare, he also provided a voice for the 2011 animated film The Prince of Tennis: The Battle of the British City, playing the character Keith.
Throughout his career, Saotome has frequently collaborated with prominent theater companies, particularly Gekidan Shinkansen, appearing in numerous stage productions such as The Seven Souls in the Skull Castle series and The Smoky Legion. He has also worked extensively within the LDH-affiliated theater group, including their 2016 production Kabuki. His live-action filmography includes roles in director Takeshi Kitano's Zatoichi and Takeshis', the HiGH&LOW film series as Ryu, and the live-action adaptation of Bleach as Renji Abarai. His work has been recognized with awards such as the 25th Asakura Performing Arts Award for Newcomer and the Kimonoist award in 2021 for his promotion of kimono culture.
