Description
Set in Paris during the early 1910s, the film follows two young Japanese women pursuing artistic dreams in a rapidly changing world. Fujiko Tsugita is a spirited aspiring painter who has defied her family’s expectations that she become a proper wife, instead using her uncle’s connections to move to Paris. Chizuru Sonoi comes from a family of naginata instructors who have relocated to France to promote their martial art. As a child, Chizuru was captivated by a performance of the ballet Giselle, a passion she keeps largely hidden from her traditional parents.
The two first cross paths as girls in Yokohama, where they attend a performance together. Years later in Paris, Chizuru rescues Fujiko from a street confrontation, leading to their unexpected reunion. When Fujiko learns of Chizuru’s secret desire to dance, she discovers that Ruslan, a young composer living in her apartment building, has a mother named Olga. Olga is a Russian émigré and former ballerina now working at a cabaret. Despite initial reluctance, Olga agrees to teach Chizuru, and an arrangement forms: Chizuru teaches Ruslan naginata in exchange for ballet lessons.
As Chizuru trains under Olga, she struggles to reconcile the grounded, low-center physicality of martial arts with the lifted, airborne quality ballet demands. Her parents pressure her to return to Japan for an arranged marriage, but she chooses to remain in Paris to pursue dance. Fujiko, meanwhile, serves as her supporter and chronicles Chizuru’s progress in sketches. However, Fujiko’s uncle and guardian suddenly disappears, leaving her without financial support. Forced to move to a cheaper attic room in Montmartre and work washing dishes at a café, Fujiko falls into a creative slump, unable to paint. She watches Chizuru advance toward the Paris Opera ballet, feeling increasingly left behind.
The backdrop of early 20th-century Paris includes subtle signs of impending war, and both women face prejudice as Japanese outsiders. Chizuru eventually earns a place in the corps de ballet for a performance of Giselle at the Opera. Watching her friend dance on stage reignites Fujiko’s emotions, recalling the wonder they both felt as children. The experience restores Fujiko’s will to paint, and she picks up her brush once more. Chizuru achieves her dream of performing, not as a star but as one dancer among many, while Fujiko rediscovers her own artistic voice.
