Matsuya Onoe
Description
Matsuya Onoe is a Japanese actor best known as a kabuki performer who has also taken on select roles as a voice actor for anime and dubbed foreign films. He was born on January 30, 1985, in Tokyo, Japan, and made his first stage appearance in kabuki in 1990 at the age of five, performing under the name Onoe Matsuya II. His stage family name is Otowaya, and his father was the sixth-generation kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke. While kabuki remains his primary profession, Onoe has expanded his career to include musical theatre, television dramas, and voice acting. His work in voice-over has been particularly notable for bringing a kabuki actor's distinctive presence to animated characters.
In the field of anime voice acting, Onoe is known for his guest roles in feature films tied to popular television series. In 2017, he voiced the character Jean Pierre Silverstein in the film Kirakira Precure a la Mode: Paris to! Omoide no Mille-Feuille!. His character is a passionate and master patissier who serves as a mentor to another key character, and Onoe was reportedly selected for the role in part due to his well-known personal appreciation for sweets. This casting also marked the first time a kabuki actor had participated in the long-running Pretty Cure franchise. More recently, he is set to appear in the series Paris ni Saku Étoile, providing the voice for the character Chū Wakabayashi.
Beyond animation originating in Japan, Onoe has established a recurring collaboration with The Walt Disney Company through its Japanese-dubbed releases. He first voiced the demigod Maui in the Japanese dub of the 2016 animated film Moana and reprises the role in the 2024 sequel, Moana 2. His performance in the original film was well received, and he has spoken publicly about the process of returning to the character and the deepening relationship between Maui and Moana in the sequel. This role represents one of his most prominent and internationally recognised voice acting achievements.
His notable achievements in voice acting include being the first kabuki actor to join the cast of a Precure film and receiving acclaim for his work in major Disney animated features. His broader career as a performer has been recognised with several awards, including the Japan Film Critics Award Newcomer Prize in 2001 and the Matsuo Geino Award Newcomer Prize in 2016, among other honours from the National Theatre of Japan. He has also taken on voice roles for dubbed versions of live-action films, such as providing the Japanese voice for the character Bernie Hayes in Godzilla vs. Kong.
