FROGMAN
Description
FROGMAN is a Japanese animation creator, director, and voice actor, born on April 9, 1971. His real name is Ryo Ono, and he is also known by the Japanese alias Kaeru Otoko, or Frog Man. He currently serves as the CEO, CCO of the creative company DLE Inc., a position he has held since 2025.
His path to becoming a voice actor is unconventional. Initially aspiring to be a film director, he worked in the camera and production departments for television dramas and movies after high school. Following his marriage, he moved to Shimane Prefecture and stepped away from the film industry. It was there that he began creating Flash animations. Inspired by other web animations, he produced a short work titled Sguy & The Family Stone around 2002, which gained popularity online and launched his career as an independent animator. This led to the establishment of his own creative unit, Kaeruotoko Shokai (Frogman Studio), and his eventual integration into DLE.
As a voice actor, FROGMAN is renowned for a singular and distinctive skill: he voices the vast majority of characters in his own animated works. He is capable of performing multiple roles, including male and female characters, by skillfully modulating his voice. This signature approach is most evident in his flagship series, Himitsu Kessha Taka no Tsume (Eagle Talon Secret Society), where he is the sole voice for all the main characters, including the dictator Sōichirō Nangoku (often referred to as Sōtō), the earnest young man Katsuo "Justice" Yoshida, the inventor Dr. Leonardo deka Vinci, and the cool-headed Philip Kazuo Okada. He also voices the Deluxe Fighter in the same franchise.
Beyond his own creations, FROGMAN frequently lends his voice to anime adaptations and parodies of well-known manga. He voiced the protagonist Kōsaku Shima in the series Weekly Shimakō. In the 2015 film Tensai Bakavon ~Yomigaeru Flanders no Inu~, he played the role of Bakabon's Papa. More recently, he voiced Heihachi Edashima in the 2023 web anime Sakigake!! Reiwa no Otoko Juku. The extensive list of roles provided, including Sōichirō Nangoku and Sōsuke Nangoku in PePePePengiin, and characters like Donichirō Koizumi and Alfred Pennyworth in the crossover DC Super Heroes vs. Eagle Talon, align with his established pattern of performing multiple roles within single productions. He has also taken on voice roles in projects outside his studio, such as the protagonist Lucius in the anime adaptation of Thermae Romae and a guest role in the Fairy Tail movie: Phoenix Priestess.
FROGMAN's work has garnered significant recognition. In 2008, he won both the Best Animation Award and the Best Director Award for Animation at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival for his work on the Eagle Talon franchise. His influence extends beyond animation and voice acting into radio and regional promotion. He has been the main personality on several radio programs and has served as a tourism ambassador for Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture since 2013.
