Ryūdai Ishizaka

Description
Ryūdai Ishizaka is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator recognized as the original creator behind several manga series and anime adaptations. He first emerged as a creator in the early 2010s, with his known works including the manga Bado Bado Mint! from 2012. Ishizaka gained wider recognition for writing and illustrating the original manga Iwa-Kakeru! Climbing Girls, which began serialization on Cygames' Cycomi platform in December 2017. This sports-focused series, centered on competitive sport climbing, concluded its first run in May 2019 and was collected into four volumes. He continued the story with a direct sequel, Iwa-Kakeru!! Try a new climbing, which ran on the same platform from June 2019 to March 2021 and was compiled into six volumes.

The commercial success of the Iwa-Kakeru! franchise led to an anime television adaptation titled Iwa-Kakeru! Sport Climbing Girls, which aired from October to December 2020. The anime was produced by Studio Blade with direction by Tetsurō Amino, and Ishizaka is officially credited as the original author. In a 2020 interview, Ishizaka explained that his interest in climbing stemmed from visiting climbing gyms with friends and watching a national high school championship, which convinced him the sport could generate compelling drama. He has also noted that he previously created manga about badminton and tennis, and that characters in Iwa-Kakeru! were inspired by real competitive climbers such as Tomoa Narasaki.

Beyond the climbing series, Ishizaka illustrated the manga adaptation of the original anime Love Flops, which was serialized in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine from June 2022 to July 2023 and released in three volumes. His other credited works as author and artist include Hanekoi Lion from 2015, Renai Flops from 2022 to 2023, and Anata-tachi Soredemo Sensei desu ka!, which began serialization in 2024. Ishizaka's body of work demonstrates a recurring focus on sports and character-driven narratives. His adaptation of Iwa-Kakeru! into an anime holds particular significance as one of the first television series centered on the sport of competitive climbing, coinciding with the sport's debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
