Takashi Yamaguchi

Takashi Yamaguchi was a Japanese actor and voice actor, born on November 17, 1936, in Hyōgo Prefecture. He passed away on April 18, 2025. His career was primarily rooted in live-action performance, particularly in television and film, before he took on notable voice roles in anime later in his life.
Yamaguchi began his career after training at the NHK Actors Training Institute. He became a familiar face in Japanese television, appearing in numerous taiga dramas and period pieces. A significant part of his career was his long-running role in the series "Ōoka Echizen," which he was a part of for 36 years, where he played the role of Tokugawa Yoshimune. He also starred in the NHK period drama "Tenka Gomen" in 1971, portraying the character Hiraga Gennai. In addition to acting, he was a television presenter, hosting the quiz show "Quiz Time Shock" for several years. Beyond acting, Yamaguchi was also a trained practitioner of the shamisen, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument.
Late in his career, Yamaguchi contributed his voice to the anime film series "Sangokushi," an adaptation of the Chinese historical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." He voiced the legendary strategist Zhuge Liang in two installments of the series. His first role as Zhuge Liang was in the second film, "Sangokushi [2] Chōkō Moyu!" (Romance of the Three Kingdoms: The Yangtze River Burns!), which was released in 1993. He reprised this role for the third and final film in the trilogy, "Sangokushi [3] Harukanaru Taichi" (Romance of the Three Kingdoms: The Faraway Land), which was released in 1994. This voice work in the "Sangokushi" films stands as his most prominent and recognized contribution to the medium of anime.
