Yūko Tanaka is a Japanese actress born on April 29, 1955, in Osaka Prefecture. She graduated from Meiji University with a degree in theater studies and began her acting career after joining the literary theater troupe Bungakuza in 1978. Her career started in television, with her debut in the NHK serial drama Sister Ma in 1979, and she gained widespread fame for her starring role as the adult Oshin in the highly acclaimed and record-breaking NHK serial television novel Oshin, which aired from 1983 to 1984.

While primarily known as a live-action actress, Tanaka has taken on notable voice acting roles in animated films. Her most prominent anime voice role is Lady Eboshi in the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke (1997), directed by Hayao Miyazaki. She also voiced the character Cob in another Studio Ghibli production, Tales from Earthsea (2006).
