Motoei Shinzawa
Description
Motoei Shinzawa is a Japanese manga artist born on June 10, 1958, in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. He is best known as the creator of the High School! Kimengumi series of manga and anime.
Shinzawa made his professional debut with the manga Sannen Kimengumi, also known as Third Year Funny-face Club, which was serialized in the influential magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1980 to 1982. Following the conclusion of that initial series, he immediately began his most famous work, High School! Kimengumi, in the same magazine, where it ran from 1982 until 1987. The series was a major success, becoming a smash hit and solidifying his reputation as a leading creator of comedic manga.
The popularity of High School! Kimengumi led to a multimedia franchise. An anime television series adaptation aired on Fuji TV from October 1985 to September 1987, spanning a total of 86 episodes. An animated film was also released in July 1986, and the property was adapted into two video games. The story focuses on a group of eccentric and misfit students who form a club known as the Kimengumi, with its humor often deriving from visual gags and wordplay, as nearly all character names are puns.
After the end of High School! Kimengumi, Shinzawa created the series I'm Shitataka, which was published from 1988 until 1990. Following this work, he took a significant hiatus from publishing new manga. He returned in 2001 with Flash! Kimengumi, a sequel to his famous series, which was published in Monthly Shōnen Gangan by Square Enix until 2005. In between, a one-volume overview titled Return of High School! Funny-face Club was released in December 2000, covering the earlier manga and anime series. The enduring appeal of his work is evident, with one industry figure, the director of Asian marketing for Dark Horse, having called High School! Kimengumi the funniest manga he had ever read.
