He pursued a career in the performing arts after completing a Master of Science degree in 2013, putting his medical school ambitions on hold to follow a childhood dream of performing. He trained at various acting studios in Toronto to develop his on-screen and voice acting capabilities.

Shillingford's most prominent and sustained voice role is that of Trox, a Tyrannosaurus Rex-like Bakugan and the guardian partner of the character Wynton Styles. He has voiced this character across multiple installments of the anime series, including Bakugan Battle Planet, Bakugan: Armored Alliance, and Bakugan: Legends. His work on Bakugan: Armored Alliance was noted for continuing during the production challenges of 2020, with Shillingford recording his lines from a home setup to ensure the show could go on.
