Kimitake Yoshioka

Description
Kimitake Yoshioka is a Japanese manga artist whose professional career began in 2008. He is best known for his artwork on the popular comedy manga Grand Blue Dreaming and as the sole creator of the romantic comedy series TenPuru. Yoshioka was born on January 29, though the specific year of his birth has not been publicly disclosed.

Yoshioka first entered the manga industry as an illustrator, handling the art for the series Material Puzzle: Zero Kreuz, based on an original story by Tetsuhiro Tsuchizuka. This work was serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan and its online platform from 2008 to 2012. He continued as an artist for other adaptations, including the manga version of the Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne spin-off and Soukyuu no Lapis Lazuli.

His career took a significant step forward in April 2014 when he began collaborating with author Kenji Inoue on Grand Blue Dreaming. Serialized in Kodansha's good! Afternoon magazine, Yoshioka served as the artist while Inoue wrote the story. The series, a college-set comedy about a diving club and heavy drinking, became a major success and received a television anime adaptation that premiered in July 2018. The manga has continued for years, and a second anime season, Grand Blue Season 2, is scheduled for release in 2025. Yoshioka was also the artist for the manga adaptation of Amagi Brilliant Park, which ran from 2014 to 2016.

In September 2018, Yoshioka launched his own original manga, TenPuru, on Kodansha's Comic Days app and website. For this series, Yoshioka took on the role of both writer and illustrator, creating the story and characters. The plot follows a young man who decides to become a Buddhist monk to escape his lecherous thoughts, only to find himself living in a temple full of women. This series highlights his ability to craft a narrative in addition to providing artwork. TenPuru was adapted into a television anime that aired from July to September 2023, produced by studio Gekkou.

As an artist, Yoshioka is known for a dynamic and expressive style that lends itself well to physical comedy and exaggerated character reactions, a signature element of Grand Blue Dreaming. His work often involves humorous and chaotic situations with a strong element of fan service. Whether as a collaborator or sole creator, his projects consistently fall within comedic genres, frequently incorporating tropes from slice-of-life and harem comedies. His significant contribution to the industry is his dual role as a reliable illustrator for major properties and as a successful original creator, proving his range within the competitive manga market.
