Hiroto Ida

Description
Hiroto Ida is a Japanese manga artist and original creator, best known as the author of the series You Don't Know Gunma Yet. Hailing from Kanagawa Prefecture, he later established his residence in Takasaki City within Gunma Prefecture, a region that would become central to his most famous work. His professional career began after winning a newcomer's award from Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine. He made his serialization debut in the same publication in 2003 with the series Dragon Revive. Following this initial work, he shifted his focus to magazines aimed at a seinen (young adult) demographic.

Ida's body of work as a writer and artist includes a range of titles published in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Among these are Sensen Spike Hills, which ran from 2005 to 2007, and Kansokusha Tamami, a three-volume series published between 2009 and 2010. The latter series, released in French as Tamami the Observer, is a psychological thriller about a man who exploits a young girl's reality-altering powers for his own social and financial gain. Other credited works from this period include Nogi: Inshuu Hakoku Sentain in 2010, and in 2011, he served as the artist for Baka ga Zenra de Yattekuru, based on an original story by Hitoma Iruma.

His most prominent and commercially successful creation is You Don't Know Gunma Yet (Omae wa Mada Gunma wo Shiranai). The manga began serialization in 2013 on the online platform Kurage Bunch, published by Shinchosha, and concluded in 2019 after eleven compiled volumes. The series is a comedic story centered on a high school student who transfers to a school in Gunma Prefecture and must navigate its unique and fiercely defended local culture, customs, and rivalries with neighboring prefectures. The popularity of the original manga led to a significant expansion into other media. It inspired a live-action television series that aired in 2017, followed by a live-action film released the same year. An anime television adaptation was subsequently produced, airing in 2018. The anime was directed by Mankyu at Asahi Production, with character designs by Tomonori Kogawa.

Across his various works, Ida has demonstrated a versatility in genre, moving from action-oriented series like Dragon Revive to psychological narratives like Kansokusha Tamami. However, his artistic identity became strongly associated with regionally-focused comedy in You Don't Know Gunma Yet, a series that blends humor with a genuine, if exaggerated, exploration of local identity and pride. His significance in the industry is marked by the successful multimedia expansion of his flagship series, which achieved adaptations in anime, live-action television, and film, indicating a broad appeal for his storytelling beyond the printed page.
