Description
Nori Kamitsuki has just moved from Chiba Prefecture to Gunma, a region notorious online as one of the most mysterious and least understood places in Japan. On his way, he receives an ominous text message from Otoya Todoroki, a childhood friend who relocated to Gunma years ago and has since grown strange. The message warns him to turn back, claiming that once someone enters Gunma, they never truly leave. Despite this unsettling welcome, Kamitsuki arrives and discovers that while Gunma is filled with bizarre local customs, intense regional pride, and a uniquely intimidating atmosphere, it is not the lawless wilderness the internet makes it out to be. Todoroki reappears as a passionate, slightly unhinged advocate for all things Gunma, determined to show Kamitsuki the prefecture’s true charms whether he likes it or not. Alongside other fiercely loyal locals, they take him on a crash course through Gunma’s peculiarities: from its hyper-specific culinary traditions and dangerous winter winds to the subtle but strict social codes that govern daily school life. The narrative unfolds through a series of comedic culture shock episodes, where Kamitsuki’s outsider perspective clashes with the locals’ fervent desire to rehabilitate Gunma’s unpopular image. As he navigates everything from the sacred rules of the local carnival to the shocking truth about its signature fermented dishes, Kamitsuki finds his initial terror slowly replaced by a reluctant fascination with the people who refuse to let their home be dismissed.
