Hiroshi Takahashi
Description
Hiroshi Takahashi is a Japanese actor and voice actor affiliated with the Bungakuza theater company. He was born on April 6, 1963, in Soka, Saitama Prefecture. He is a graduate of Waseda University, where he studied French literature. His birth name is written with the characters 高桥广司, but he later changed his credited name to the phonetic spelling 高橋ひろし, which is also pronounced Hiroshi Takahashi.
Takahashi's path to performing arts began in earnest after he graduated from university. In April 1986, he entered the Bungakuza Theatre Research Institute, marking the start of his professional training. He made his stage debut while still a trainee and officially became a full member of the Bungakuza company in March 1991. His career has been defined by a dual commitment to both stage and voice acting. In theatre, he has performed in numerous classical productions, including works such as Oedipus Rex, Hamlet, Richard III, and King Lear. He has also appeared in musicals, with roles in stage adaptations of Saint Seiya and Kiki's Delivery Service.
As a voice actor, Takahashi has built an extensive and varied body of work in anime, video games, and dubbing for foreign films and dramas. His anime roles span a wide range of characters and series. He is known for playing Sadojima Hoji in the 1996 television series Rurouni Kenshin and has also had roles in the long-running series Detective Conan and Ojarumaru. His versatility is evident in his work on shows like Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran, where he provided voices for multiple different characters across several episodes. In the franchise Ninja Girl & Samurai Master, he voiced the character Hosokawa Fujitaka in both the second and third series. Other notable credits from the early to mid-1990s include roles in Lil' Red Riding Hood Cha-Cha, where he voiced the characters Mikeneko, Access, and Mikeneko-hakase, and the role of Mr. Training Pants in Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoi yo!! Masaru-san. His film credits include a role in the 2004 Studio Ghibli film Howl's Moving Castle.
Takahashi's career is marked by a steady presence in the industry rather than a single breakout role. His long-standing membership in Bungakuza, a prestigious theatre company, underscores his foundation as a classically trained stage actor. This background has informed his approach to voice acting, contributing to his adaptability and the depth he brings to a wide range of characters. His ability to play multiple recurring roles within a single series, such as in Ojarumaru or Tsukikage Ran, highlights his vocal range and skill. In addition to his on-screen work, he has also lent his voice to video games like Soukaigi and participated in radio plays for NHK, further demonstrating the breadth of his career in the performing arts.
