Michiko Nomura

Michiko Nomura is a Japanese actress and voice actress born on March 31, 1938, in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. She began her career in 1958 and has been affiliated with several talent agencies over the decades, including the Tokyo Actor's Consumer's Cooperative Society and Aoni Production. She is currently associated with Ken Production, where she also serves as a counselor. Ken Production was founded by her late husband, fellow voice actor Kenji Utsumi, to whom she was married from 1967 until his death in 2013.

Nomura is best known for her long-running role as Shizuka Minamoto in the beloved anime series Doraemon. She was the original voice actress for the character in the 1979 TV Asahi series, a role she played continuously until 2005. Her portrayal of Shizuka extended to numerous Doraemon films and specials, including Doraemon: Nobita's the Night Before a Wedding, Doraemon: Boku no Umareta Hi, Doraemon: Ganbare! Gian!!, Doraemon: Obāchan no Omoide, and Doraemon: Treasure of the Shinugumi Mountain, among many others. As of late 2024, she is the last surviving member of the lead cast from that iconic 1979 series.

Another of her signature and long-standing roles was Wakame Isono in the long-running series Sazae-san, which she voiced from 1976 to 2005. Earlier in her career, she took on the title role in the 1975 anime adaptation of Maya the Bee. She also voiced the character Priscilla in the 1974 series Calimero and Mitchi Shimura in Speed Racer from 1967 onwards.

Her extensive filmography includes a wide variety of other notable roles across different decades. She played Maya in Maya the Bee, Aya in Konchu Monogatari Shin Minashigo Hutch, and Kona in Serendipity Monogatari: Pyua-tou no Nakama-tachi. She was the voice of Ruriko Wakatsuki in Tiger Mask, Etsuko Sarutobi in Sarutobi Ecchan, and appeared in Pink Lady Monogatari: Eiko no Tenshitachi as Mie. Other roles include Yumiko Furumi in Babel II, Gerda and Ilze in Andersen Stories, and roles in Kick no Oni and The Princess and the Moon.

After stepping back from regular voice work in 2005, Nomura returned in 2009 for a notable role as Tora Harakiri in the series Kämpfer für die Liebe, also known simply as Kämpfer. This role was particularly memorable as she performed alongside her husband, Kenji Utsumi, who voiced a character in the same series.

In recognition of her long and distinguished career, Michiko Nomura was honored with a Merit Award at the 10th Seiyu Awards in 2016.
