Description
Michi Shimura, known in Western adaptations as Trixie, is the girlfriend of Speed Racer and a core member of his racing team. She is an adolescent girl with brown hair and blue eyes who frequently wears a blouse adorned with the letter M, which stands for her Japanese given name. Her background includes being the daughter of the president of Shimura Aviation, a detail from the manga that explains her access to and skill with helicopters. She regularly pilots her own helicopter during races, serving as Speed's aerial spotter, a role that keeps her closely involved in the action.

Personality-wise, Michi is spirited, brave, and outspoken. She is known for a quick temper and a jealous streak, particularly when Speed pays attention to other girls, which adds a layer of comic relief to the series. However, these traits are balanced by her deep loyalty and protectiveness toward Speed and the rest of the team. She is not afraid to speak her mind, whether arguing with Speed, calling out villains, or firmly informing any rival that Speed is taken. Despite being captured by adversaries on occasion, she never cowers or pleads; instead, she delivers sharp verbal reprimands and often manages to escape or be rescued without losing her composure.

Her primary motivation is her commitment to Speed and his success as a racer. She is driven by a desire to support him from the air and, when necessary, to rescue him from danger. She also values her own role in the team and refuses to be sidelined or treated as helpless. This assertiveness makes her a consistent voice of reason and a reliable ally.

Michi's key relationship is with Speed, with whom she shares a close and often argumentative romantic bond. Their dynamic is marked by bickering and jealousy, but the underlying affection and mutual respect are clear. She also interacts regularly with Speed's younger brother Spritle and his pet chimpanzee Chim-Chim, as well as with Speed's parents and his mechanic, Sparky. In the later spin-off Speed Racer: The Next Generation, she is implied to have become the mother of Speed's children, X and Speed Jr., indicating a long-term future for the relationship.

Throughout the series, Michi experiences limited formal character development, but she remains a consistent and notable figure. For a female character in 1960s anime, she was exceptional in that she was not portrayed as a perpetual damsel in distress. Instead, she frequently proves herself capable in physical confrontations, even saving Speed and other male characters from peril. This independence and capability mark her as ahead of her time.

In terms of abilities, Michi is an expert helicopter pilot, adept at flying in challenging conditions and using her aircraft for search-and-rescue, smoke-bombing adversaries, and providing tactical support during races. She is also physically competent, able to hold her own in fights and handle dangerous situations without relying on others. Her resourcefulness, quick thinking, and refusal to back down make her an invaluable asset to the team.
