Joana Carvalho

Description
Joana Carvalho is a Portuguese actress and voice-over artist, known for her extensive work in the European Portuguese dubs of animated series, particularly the Pokémon franchise. Born Maria Joana Morais de Carvalho on 27th June 1977, she initially pursued higher education in Psychology at the University of Porto before attending the Interpretation course at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE). Her acting career includes participation in numerous stage productions with various theatre companies in Portugal since the early 2000s. She began working in dubbing and voice-overs for television series and cartoons in 2001.

Carvalho's career in anime voice acting is most prominently defined by her long-standing association with the Pokémon anime series, specifically for dubs produced at the Cinemágica studio in Porto. Following the transfer of the series' Portuguese rights to the Panda Biggs channel and the subsequent relocation of dubbing production to Cinemágica in 2010, Carvalho became a key member of the new voice cast. Her first major role in the franchise was as Dawn, whom she began voicing in the eleventh season of the anime, Pokémon Diamond & Pearl: Battle Dimension. She replaced the previous voice actress and continued to provide the voice for the character in all subsequent Diamond & Pearl series episodes and movies.

With the beginning of the Pokémon: Black & White series, Carvalho's involvement in the franchise expanded significantly. In this new saga, she was entrusted with multiple roles, voicing the characters of Professor Juniper, the recurring rival Bianca, and Nurse Joy. Her performance as Bianca, a character noted for being impulsive and energetic, was particularly well-received by fans, who praised her versatility in distinguishing the voice from her previous work as the more level-headed Dawn. She reprised all these roles in the subsequent series, Pokémon: Black & White: Rival Destinies. Her work in the Pokémon franchise also extended to the movies; for example, she voiced Nurse Joy in the Portuguese dub of Pokémon the Movie: Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice.

Beyond the Black & White saga, Carvalho's contribution to the Pokémon world continued. She returned to voice Dawn in later productions, including Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles. In more recent series, such as Pokémon Journeys: The Series and Pokémon Master Journeys: The Series, she has taken on new roles, voicing the characters of Korrina. Her filmography also includes voicing Aria in the Pokémon XY and Pokémon XY & Z series.

Outside of the Pokémon universe, Joana Carvalho has lent her voice to a variety of other anime and animated projects for the Portuguese market. Her credits include the role of Barnette Orangello in the series Vandread and Vandread: The Second Stage. She has also voiced characters in productions such as Captain Tsubasa (as Tippy), The Dog of Flanders (as Senhora Cogetz), and the 22nd Pokémon film, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution (as Miranda). Her work demonstrates a consistent and significant presence in the field of Portuguese anime dubbing, primarily through her long-term collaboration with the Cinemágica studio on the Pokémon franchise.
