Tobira Oda
Description
Tobira Oda is a Japanese manga artist born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, in 1974. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Danchi Tomoo, which was adapted into a television anime that aired from April 2013 to February 2015. The Danchi Tomoo manga was serialized in Shogakukan's seinen manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from 2003 until its conclusion on February 4, 2019. The collected chapters were published in 32 or 33 tankobon volumes under Shogakukan's Big Comics imprint. The story is a comedy centered on daily life in a Japanese apartment complex.
Before Danchi Tomoo, Oda created several other manga, including works published as early as 2001 such as Kosame-chan and Maruhi Keisatsu 24-ji. Another early work is Softly Liked, which was published in 2002. He is also the author of Shonbori Onsen, published in 2009. Following the conclusion of his most famous work, Oda has continued to produce new manga series. In September 2019, he launched a manga titled Yokosuka Kozue in Big Comic Spirits magazine. In October 2020, he began publishing Shimeppoi Hanashi desu ga... (This Is a Melancholy Story, But...) in Shogakukan's Big Comic Original Zōkan magazine. In August 2021, he launched Chotto Fushigi na Kono Uchū (This Slightly Strange Universe) on Futabasha's Web Action website, with the series ending in January 2023. In June 2024, he started a new series called Sorowanai Kazoku (Misaligned Family) in Shueisha Creative's YOU magazine, which was described as a family drama with gradual laughter.
Tobira Oda's work on Danchi Tomoo earned significant critical recognition, as the manga was nominated for the prestigious Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize three years in a row, in 2005, 2006, and 2007. This level of recognition from one of the manga industry's highest honors speaks to his significance as a creator of comedic, character-driven stories about everyday life. The 78-episode anime adaptation of Danchi Tomoo, directed by Ayumu Watanabe and produced by Shogakukan Music & Digital Entertainment, brought his work to a wider audience and remains his most notable contribution to the anime medium.
